In 2006, a collaboration of agencies applied to the Biodiversity Advice and Condition Fund for funding for Project Kahikatea which was successful and completed in 2008.
Project Kahikatea completed a survey of landowners across the Waikato Region to document the current condition of kahikatea stands and to identify what could be done to help landowners protect and enhance the remaining stands. A number of field days were held and newsletters produced, collating knowledge and experience on best management practices. Following this, a successful application to the Biodiversity Condition Fund has assisted a select number of landowners to fence their stands.
Member organisations of Project Kahikatea include: the Waikato Branch of NZ Farm Forestry Association, Waikato Regional Council, NZ Landcare Trust, Waikato Biodiversity Forum, Department of Conservation, QEII National Trust, Federated Farmers and select individuals.
We wish Project Kahikatea to continue in the future through the following means:
- providing field days and site visits to share best practice for kahikatea protection amongst scientists and landowners;
- facilitating landowner applications for funding for fencing, weed control and edge planting of kahikatea stands;
- compiling and disseminating educational information on the protection and care of kahikatea in the Waikato Region.
